Year 9 Induction
"People cannot truly know about something unless they have experienced it themselves." Anonymous.
When I first read this quote, I doubted its truthfulness. Previously, I thought I knew everything about being in Year 9, but it turns out I still have a lot to learn. When Eloise Good stood up in assembly and explained to everyone that we, the Year 9s of 2006, were about to be inducted as leaders of the Middle School, it finally sunk in. We were not the 'little kids' anymore. This came as quite a shock to me, as I still remember my first Year 9 induction, as I looked up at those 'big girls' walking across the stage, and wondering what it would be like when my time came. It was not until I was waiting in line to walk across the stage myself that I realised that this was really happening, and I was now a 'big girl' too.
On the night before the induction I had polished my shoes, ironed my uniform (as always) and did my hair. Form teachers had tirelessly run through the assembly about one hundred times to make sure that we got everything exactly right, and without them and Ms Lake, we would have sat in the wrong place or not known when to say 'we do' (which took some practising).
The morning went extremely smoothly, with prayers, inspirational Bible readings and hymns (which were accompanied by our fantastic orchestra). An amazing solo sung by Natalia DiGiorgio had us all looking on in amazement. Despite this smoothness, someone did trip down the stairs, but in true Seymour style, got up and sat back down with dignity.
Being inducted in our different roles which have been chosen for us by our classmates will hopefully provide lots of fun and experience, as the induction assembly certainly did. We learnt that being in Year 9 was not just about the fifteen minutes of fame, or the gold badge; it is about the responsibility that comes with it. I have now realised that this quote is true, and that one cannot know what it is like to be a leader of the Middle School at Seymour, until experiencing it for themselves.
