Enrolment
Guidelines
Step
1
Students must be assessed using recognised and
accredited testing procedures to ascertain their
level of linguistic proficiency.
Step 2
In consultation with school personnel, parents and
student, the level of academic study is set. This
is determined through a long-term view of what the
student's intended career path may be and what
study levels and subjects are required to achieve
that aim. Careers information, aptitude testing and
any other advice or relevant information is
included in the process.
Step 3
The intensive language requirement is established.
Students are allocated a certain time each day for
intensive language tuition based upon their
assessed level of development and specific subject
needs.
Step 4
The appropriate bridging modules are selected.
These are selected in line with desired subject
choices, the required level of achievement and the
assessed level of language proficiency.
Step 5
Mainstream classes are chosen where appropriate. It
is common for students to participate in mainstream
mathematics classes soon after arrival, as language
dependence is minimal. Other classes offered
outside of the school, i.e. Chinese, are
incorporated where appropriate.
Language study (in
the student's first language, i.e. Chinese,
Japanese, Indonesian) is encouraged. It provides
international students with more flexibility in
their final year of study (Year 12) and success
rates are usually high.
Step 6
A student's progress is closely monitored in all
areas of study. Language development will be
assessed in 10-week blocks and any modifications
that are required to assist the rate of language
acquisition are made.
Step 7
Students have access to support in all areas of
their study in negotiation with their subject
teachers and the ESL (English as a Second Language)
staff. Private tuition sessions are also available
if required.
