Seymour is an amazing school

Principal's message

Dear Parents

Following our recent community survey, and our comprehensive national and international research, the College is pleased to present Stage 1 of its one-to-one Technology Plan.

In essence, in 2012, and in keeping with our vision to support ‘any time, anywhere’ access:

  • students at Years 5, 6 and 7 are asked to purchase an Apple iPad for at least the next two years of their schooling;
  • students in Year 8, 2012, will continue to have access to the College’s computer laboratories, as well as our recently-purchased trolleys of laptops for the coming year;
  • students in Year 9, 2012, will borrow a College iPad (purchased under the Federal Government’s DER grant) for the coming academic year;
  • our 2012 Year 10s are asked to purchase the Toshiba Portege R830 - the same model as teaching staff have. (Students in Years 11 and 12 may choose to buy the Portege 830, as well, though it is not required under our one-to-one Technology Plan - see attached documents and our weblink for more information.)

To achieve all of this, we will be building upon the plans and infrastructure strategically implemented at the College over recent years.

While we recognise that this program will be an additional cost for some families, I am able to reassure parents that this has been taken into account in the setting of 2012 tuition fees for the year levels involved in this exciting initiative. Further, eligible parents can receive a 50% rebate on educational expenses through the education tax refund program, and a leasing option is also offered. It is worth noting here, too, that the introduction of the personal devices is likely to see a reduction in the overall cost of textbooks.

Additional details about Stage 1 (2012) and Stage 2 (2013) of our one-to-one program - including cost and purchase dates are presented in the following information and FAQs.

We are delighted to embark upon Stage 1 of Seymour College’s one-to-one program, and know that our students will benefit from, and be excited by, these innovations.

Our aim remains to support authentic 21st century learning, characterised by the continuing development of higher order thinking skills, and with increased access for all, and we thank you for your support of this important step in such a vital process.

Yours sincerely

Belinda Provis
Principal
