With a strong focus on fun and play, our Pre School learning activities include:
- Music: dancing and moving, listening, playing musical instruments, singing and learning finger plays, chants and rhymes
- Play: pretending and role playing, fantasising and imagining
- Physical exercise: developing body control and confidence, learning about movement in space
- Wellbeing: learning to cooperate, share and take turns, show respect and consideration for others, be independent and responsible
- Community awareness: learning about, and helping, others in the community
- Maths: classifying, solving problems, measuring and counting , matching and sorting, making patterns, comparing
- Science: observing and discovering, using the senses, experimenting, growing and caring for the environment, learning about ourselves, animals, the world around us
- English: reading and sharing books, poetry and news, recognising and using sounds, comprehending, listening and discussing, questioning and communicating
- Art and craft: constructing and making, building and creating, painting, drawing and pasting.
Additional activities offered include:
- A buddy program: cross age groups join together to share learning experiences and foster community spirit
- Gross motor skills development: to assist the children's physical skill development programs include yoga sessions and visits to the gym
- Library lovers: each week the children visit the Junior School's Resource Centre where they become familiar with the facilities and staff; they can borrow books and participate in story telling sessions
- ICT skills: as well as using computers in The Lakes Pre School Centre on a daily basis, the children are involved in weekly sessions in the Junior School's ICT suite where they develop computer confidence, hand /eye coordination, and an enjoyment of the many challenges the programs have to offer.
- Music and movement: a weekly program incorporating fun activities designed to encourage a sense of rhythm, listening skills, body and spatial awareness and an avenue for self expression.
Parents are encouraged to be involved and are always welcome at The Lakes. Parents have the opportunity to be involved in many day to day activities such as cooking, storytelling and cultural events.
Regular newsletters and constant communication enable us to keep parents informed about all events in The Lakes. Each term a folder of some of the children's work is sent home for parents to share with their child. A written summary and a CD of photos of the children's involvement in activities are included twice a year.
